Research is an important part of my practice and much research has taken place and continues to this day. There is so much to learn and it is a joy to discover, to grow familiar and to express. Learning through direct experience is best and the further into the journey i travel the more accessible this means becomes. The internet offers assistance in all manner of ways not least among them providing access to books for books are my preferred method of research. Each one is as a gem, a repository of knowledge from another time. For the sake of authenticity i seek books published in 1904 or earlier and by this means i am developing a performative work of a gallery talk on paintings by the late Mr Whistler, Mr Constable and my teacher in the depiction of Landscape Mr Alfred East. More recent publications have also been of great assistance such as “Girls Growing Up In Late Victorian And Edwardian England” by Carol Dyhouse and any number of publications by Shire books. Shire books are simply fascinating covering a diverse range of subjects that no other publisher can rival. Every one i have read has been well written and informative and there is little better to be had in a book.
